The Mover

The Mover

O SUPREME MOVING CAUSE,

May I always be subordinate to thee,

  be dependent upon thee,

  be found in the path where thou doest walk,

  and where thy Spirit moves,

  take heed of estrangement from thee,

  of becoming insensible to thy love.

Thou dost not move men like stones,

  but dost endue them with life,

  not to enable them to move without thee,

  but in submission to thee, the first mover.

O Lord, I am astonished at the difference

  between my receivings and my deservings,

  between the state I am now in and my past gracelessness,

  between the heaven I am bound for and the hell I merit.

Who made me to differ, but thee?

  for I was no more ready to receive Christ than were others;

I could not have begun to love thee hadst thou not first loved me,

  or been willing unless thou hadst first made me so.

O that such a crown should fit the head of such a sinner!

  such high advancement be for an unfruitful person!

  such joys for so vile rebel!

Infinite wisdom cast the design of salvation

  into the mould of purchase and freedom;

Let wrath deserved be written on the door of hell,

  but the free gift of grace on the gate of heaven.

I know that my sufferings are the result of my sinning,

  but in heaven both shall cease;

Grant me to attain this haven and be done with sailing,

  and may the gales of thy mercy blow me safely into harbor.

Let thy love draw me nearer to thyself,

  wean me from sin, mortify me to this world,

  and make me ready for my departure hence.

Secure me by thy grace as I sail across this stormy sea.

He Will Make You Love His Word

The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the LORD are firm, and all of them are righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb. By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward.
Psa. 19:7-11

If the Spirit of God is in you, He will make you love the Word of God and, if any of you imagine that the Spirit of God will lead you to dispense with the Bible, you are under the influence of another spirit which is not the Spirit of God at all! I trust that the Holy Spirit will endear to you every page of this Divine Record so that you will feed upon it and, afterwards, speak it out to others. I think it is well worthy of your constant remembrance that, even in death, our blessed Master showed the ruling passion of His spirit so that His last words were a quotation from Scripture.

Do you speak my language?

I reach out for your commands, which I love, that I may meditate on your decrees. Psa 119:48

The Bible is my standard of language as well as sentiment. I endeavor not only to think but to speak as the oracles of God. Show me any one of the inspired writers who mentions Christ or faith more frequently than I do, and I will mention them more frequently.

The Heavens Declare Thy Glory

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. Psa 19:1-4

The final goal of the blessed life, moreover, rests in the knowledge of God. Lest anyone, then, be excluded from access to happiness, he not only sowed in men’s minds that seed of religion of which we have spoken but revealed himself and daily discloses himself in the whole workmanship of the universe. As a consequence, men cannot open their eyes without being compelled to see him. Indeed, his essence is incomprehensible; hence, his divineness far escapes all human perception. But upon his individual works he has engraved unmistakable marks of his glory, so clear and so prominent that even unlettered and stupid folk cannot plead the excuse of ignorance...in the creation of the universe he brought forth those insignia whereby he shows his glory to us, whenever and wherever we cast our gaze...wherever you cast your eyes, there is no spot in the universe wherein you cannot discern at least some sparks of his glory.

The Blind Leading The Blind

The discerning heart seeks knowledge, but the mouth of a fool feeds on folly. Prov 5:14

I cannot but repeat the observation, wherein experience confirms me more and more, that they who disbelieve the Bible will believe anything.

Holiness Vanity! Vanity!

I pity those who try to be holy without Christ! Your labor is all in vain. You are putting money in a bag with holes. You are pouring water into a sieve. You are rolling a huge round stone uphill. You are building up a wall with untempered mortar. Believe me, you are beginning at the wrong end. You must come to Christ first, and He shall give you His sanctifying Spirit. You must learn to say with Paul, "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me." (Phil. 4:13)

The Truth Is No Joke...

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.
II Tim 2:15

I search for truth, plain Bible truth, without any regard to the praise or dispraise of men. If you will assist me in this search, more especially by showing me where I have mistaken my way, it will be gratefully acknowledged.

-John Wesley (Letters III, 157-58)
