Which View Do You Choose

There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death. Prov 14;12

Why do people think the things they think, say the things they say, and do the things they do?

Two Life Views:

The Secular view believes people are intrinsically good, they master their own fate, self-determines the boundaries of their achievements and knowledge, and no moral standards constrain them apart from those they choose at their own discretion.

The Christian view believes an all-powerful God created the heavens and the earth. This living, omniscient God possesses all knowledge, and He establishes absolute moral standards by which man is expected to abide. He is holy, loving, personal.

Which view do you truly live by?

Labor According To Thy Ability

The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor. For we are co-workers in God's service; you are God's field, God's building. I Cor 3:8-9

The wise Gamaliel was once instructing his disciples in the different duties, to the discharge of which every man is bound. But the youngest of them had not yet attained such height as to feel that virtue was in itself so lovely, that for itself, and for its own sake, it was to be practiced. He therefore looked for some reward beside that which it bears so richly, so abundantly in itself, and he said to his teacher, "Master, wilt thou tell us wherefore it is that God hath not affixed to each particular good work its own special peculiar reward?"

And the wise Gamaliel said, "I will endeavor to answer this question, as I have done too many others, by parable." The disciples were hushed in reverent silence, and the teacher spoke thus:--"In the climes of the East, there lived a king who desired to lay out around his palace a beautiful and splendid garden. He called the laborers into it, and left each one free to adorn his garden with whatever tree or shrub, his fancy most preferred, the only condition prescribed being that the garden should be fully stocked, and that nothing should be wanting. The work went rapidly on, and when it was fully completed the king summoned all the laborers before him, and each one name the vegetable, or flower, or tree, which he had planted in the garden. "Nothing was wanting; no herb, no flower, nor shrub, nor tree. The glorious tulips, the lowly violet, the bright-hued rose, the soft Lilly, all were there. From the fruit tree with boughs pendent with luxuriant clusters to the small herb, from the cedar to the hyssop on the wall, not one was missing; and the king looked around upon his garden, and smiled in his joy, for behold it was richly and abundantly stored and he gave to each laborer according to his work." The teacher was silent.

"How is this tale the answer to our question?" said the disciples. "Is my meaning hidden from you?" returned the master. "Think once again, and you will perceive that had the king specified the reward for each particular plant he would have defeated his own object. Would not every one of the workmen have bestowed his labor upon that to which the highest reward was affixed, and the result would have been that the king's garden would have presented one dull and cheerless uniformity, instead of the now diversified beauty, and varied utility which made the king's heart glad as he gazed upon the work of the voluntary choice, which made each plant a free-will offering on the part of his servants. Now, suppose the spiritual kingdom of God to be his garden, his servants to be the laborers called to work in it, and you have an answer to your question." Krummacher

Christ is always the same!

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Heb 13:8

Christ is always the same! It is this which makes the gospel so excellent and precious. We do not bid you depend on anything less than the tried corner-stone, the fountain whose water shall never fail - the city of refuge whose walls shall never be broken down - the sure Rock of Ages. Churches may decay and perish; riches may make themselves wings and fly away, but they who build their happiness on Christ crucified and union with Him by faith, that person is standing on a foundation which shall never be moved, and will know something of true peace.

Your are worth everything to Christ!

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Matt 11:28-30

I think you may judge of a man’s character by the persons whose affection he seeks. If you find a man seeking only the affection of those who are great, depend upon it he is ambitious and self-seeking; but when you observe that a man seeks the affection of those who can do nothing for him, but for whom he must do everything, you know that he is not seeking himself, but that pure benevolence sways his heart. When I read in the text that the Lord gathers together the outcasts of Israel, and when I see that the text is truly applicable to the Lord Jesus Christ, because this is just what he did, I see another illustration of the gentleness of his heart, who said, “Take my yoke upon you, for I am meek and lowly of heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” Be glad to-night, dear friends, that we gather around such a Savior as this, from whom all pride and self-seeking are absent, and who coming down among us in gentleness and meekness, comes to gather those whom no man cares for — those who are judged to be worthless and irreclaimable.

The Mover

The Mover

O SUPREME MOVING CAUSE,

May I always be subordinate to thee,

  be dependent upon thee,

be found in the path where thou doest walk,

  and where thy Spirit moves,

take heed of estrangement from thee,

of becoming insensible to thy love.

Thou dost not move men like stones,

but dost endue them with life,

not to enable them to move without thee,

but in submission to thee, the first mover.

O Lord, I am astonished at the difference

between my receivings and my deservings,

between the state I am now in and my past gracelessness,

between the heaven I am bound for and the hell I merit.

Who made me to differ, but thee?

  for I was no more ready to receive Christ than were others;

I could not have begun to love thee hadst thou not first loved me,

or been willing unless thou hadst first made me so.

O that such a crown should fit the head of such a sinner!

such high advancement be for an unfruitful person!

such joys for so vile rebel!

Infinite wisdom cast the design of salvation

  into the mould of purchase and freedom;

Let wrath deserved be written on the door of hell,

but the free gift of grace on the gate of heaven.

I know that my sufferings are the result of my sinning,

  but in heaven both shall cease;

Grant me to attain this haven and be done with sailing,

and may the gales of thy mercy blow me safely into harbor.

Let thy love draw me nearer to thyself,

wean me from sin, mortify me to this world,

and make me ready for my departure hence.

Secure me by thy grace as I sail across this stormy sea.

He Will Make You Love His Word

The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the LORD are firm, and all of them are righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb. By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward.
Psa. 19:7-11

If the Spirit of God is in you, He will make you love the Word of God and, if any of you imagine that the Spirit of God will lead you to dispense with the Bible, you are under the influence of another spirit which is not the Spirit of God at all! I trust that the Holy Spirit will endear to you every page of this Divine Record so that you will feed upon it and, afterwards, speak it out to others. I think it is well worthy of your constant remembrance that, even in death, our blessed Master showed the ruling passion of His spirit so that His last words were a quotation from Scripture.

Do you speak my language?

I reach out for your commands, which I love, that I may meditate on your decrees. Psa 119:48

The Bible is my standard of language as well as sentiment. I endeavor not only to think but to speak as the oracles of God. Show me any one of the inspired writers who mentions Christ or faith more frequently than I do, and I will mention them more frequently.

The Heavens Declare Thy Glory

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. Psa 19:1-4

The final goal of the blessed life, moreover, rests in the knowledge of God. Lest anyone, then, be excluded from access to happiness, he not only sowed in men’s minds that seed of religion of which we have spoken but revealed himself and daily discloses himself in the whole workmanship of the universe. As a consequence, men cannot open their eyes without being compelled to see him. Indeed, his essence is incomprehensible; hence, his divineness far escapes all human perception. But upon his individual works he has engraved unmistakable marks of his glory, so clear and so prominent that even unlettered and stupid folk cannot plead the excuse of ignorance...in the creation of the universe he brought forth those insignia whereby he shows his glory to us, whenever and wherever we cast our gaze...wherever you cast your eyes, there is no spot in the universe wherein you cannot discern at least some sparks of his glory.

The Blind Leading The Blind

The discerning heart seeks knowledge, but the mouth of a fool feeds on folly. Prov 5:14

I cannot but repeat the observation, wherein experience confirms me more and more, that they who disbelieve the Bible will believe anything.

Holiness Vanity! Vanity!

I pity those who try to be holy without Christ! Your labor is all in vain. You are putting money in a bag with holes. You are pouring water into a sieve. You are rolling a huge round stone uphill. You are building up a wall with untempered mortar. Believe me, you are beginning at the wrong end. You must come to Christ first, and He shall give you His sanctifying Spirit. You must learn to say with Paul, "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me." (Phil. 4:13)

The Truth Is No Joke...

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.
II Tim 2:15

I search for truth, plain Bible truth, without any regard to the praise or dispraise of men. If you will assist me in this search, more especially by showing me where I have mistaken my way, it will be gratefully acknowledged.

Fixing our eyes on Jesus...

"My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness:
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,        "Fixing our eyes on
But wholly lean on Jesus' name.               Jesus...     Heb 12:2
On Christ, the solid rock I stand;
all other ground is sinking sand."

It is ever the Holy Spirit's work to turn our eyes away from self to Jesus; but Satan's work is just the opposite of this, for he is constantly trying to make us regard ourselves instead of Christ. He insinuates, "Your sins are too great for pardon; you have no faith; you do not repent enough; you will never be able to continue to the end; you have not the joy of His children; you have such a wavering hold of Jesus." All these are thoughts about self, and we shall never find comfort or assurance by looking within. But the Holy Spirit turns our eyes entirely away from self: He tells us that we are nothing, but that "Christ is all in all." Remember, therefore, it is not thy hold of Christ that saves thee-it is Christ; it is not thy joy in Christ that saves thee-it is Christ; it is not even faith in Christ, though that be the instrument-it is Christ's blood and merits; therefore, look not so much to thy hand with which thou art grasping Christ, as to Christ; look not to thy hope, but to Jesus, the source of thy hope; look not to thy faith, but to Jesus, the author and finisher of thy faith. We shall never find happiness by looking at our prayers, our doings, or our feelings; it is what Jesus is, not what we are, that gives rest to the soul. If we would at once overcome Satan and have peace with God, it must be by "looking unto Jesus." Keep thine eye simply on Him; let His death, His sufferings, His merits, His glories, His intercession, be fresh upon thy mind; when thou wakest in the morning look to Him; when thou liest down at night look to Him. Oh! let not thy hopes or fears come between thee and Jesus; follow hard after Him, and He will never fail thee.

Yes, I am a Bible-bigot

Yes, I am a Bible-bigot. I follow it in all things, both great and small.  -John Wesley (Journal 5, pg 169)

"Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

God Our Safe Portion

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Rom 8:38-39

"God is a safe portion, a secure portion. He is a portion that none can rob or wrong you of; He is a portion that none can touch or take from you: He is a portion that none can cheat or spoil you of. God is such a portion, that no friend, no foe, no man, no enemy, no devil can ever rob a Christian of.  -Thomas Brooks

Christ Is Ever With Them...

What stronger consolation could believers desire than this? Christ is ever with them.

You have searched me, LORD, and you know me.

You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.

You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.

Before a word is on my tongue you, LORD, know it completely.

You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?

If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea,

even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.

If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,"

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.

Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them!

Ps 139:1-17

Words Matter...

But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. Matt 12:36

Our Lord tells us, that "every idle word that men speak, they will give account of in the day of judgment." And He adds, "By your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned."

There are few of our Lord's sayings which are so heart-searching as this. There is nothing, perhaps, to which most men pay less attention than their words. They go through their daily work, speaking and talking without thought or reflection, and seem to imagine that if they do what is right, it matters but little what they say.

But is it so? Are our words so utterly trifling and unimportant? We dare not say so, with such a passage of Scripture as this before our eyes. Our words are the evidence of the state of our hearts, as surely as the taste of the water is an evidence of the state of the spring. "Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks." The lips only utter what the mind conceives. Our words will form one subject of inquiry at the day of judgment. We shall have to give account of our sayings, as well as our doings. Truly these are very solemn considerations. If there were no other text in the Bible, this passage ought to convince us, that we are all "guilty before God," and need a righteousness better than our own, even the righteousness of Christ. (Phil. 3:9.)

Know Thyself

For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light. Ps 36:9

It is certain that man never achieves a clear knowledge of himself unless he has first looked upon God’s face, and then descends from contemplating him to scrutinize himself. For we always seem to ourselves righteous and upright and wise and holy — this pride is innate in all of us — unless by clear proofs we stand convinced of our own unrighteousness, foulness, folly, and impurity. Moreover, we are not thus convinced if we look merely to ourselves and not also to the Lord, who is the sole standard by which this judgment must be measured.

Ever-Present Always and Forever

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Psa 46:1

A help that is not present when we need it is of small value. The anchor which is left at home is of no use to the seaman in the hour of storm.

Very few earthly helps could be called 'very present': they are usually far in the seeking, far in the using, and farther still when once used.

But as for the Lord our God, He is present when we seek Him, present when we need Him, and present when we have already enjoyed His aid.

He is more than 'present,' He is very present. More present than the nearest friend can be, for He is in us in our trouble; more present than we are to ourselves, for sometimes we lack presence of mind.

He is always present, effectually present, sympathetically present, altogether present. He is present now if this is a gloomy season.

Let us rest ourselves upon Him. He is our refuge, let us hide in Him; He is our strength, let us array ourselves with Him; He is our help, let us lean upon Him; He is our very present help, let us repose in Him now.

We need not have a moment’s care or an instant’s fear. 'The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.'"

Redeeming Love

Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners." Matt 9:12-13

"Go where you will, you need not ransack earth to find sinners, for they are common enough. You may find them in every lane and street of every city, and town, and village, and hamlet.

It is for such that Jesus died. If you will select me the grossest specimen of humanity, if he be but born of woman, I will have hope of him yet, because Jesus Christ is come to seek and to save sinners.

Redeeming love has set apart many of the worst of mankind to be the reward of the Saviour's passion. Effectual grace calls forth many of the vilest of the vile to sit at the table of mercy, and therefore let none despair.

But believe on Him and you shall be saved. Trust your soul with Him and He will bring you to His Father's right hand in glory everlasting."

Preaching Stumbling Blocks and Foolishness

But we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles... I Cor 1:23

"If we do not preach about sin and God's judgment on it, we cannot present Christ as Saviour from sin and the wrath of God. And if we are silent about these things, and preach a Christ who saves only from self and the sorrows of this world, we are not preaching the Christ of the Bible.

We are, in effect bearing false witness and preaching a false Christ. Our message is 'another gospel, which is not another.' Such preaching may soothe some, but it will help nobody; for a Christ who is not seen and sought as a Saviour from sin will not be found to save from self or from anything else.

An imaginary Christ will not bring a real salvation; and a half-truth presented as the whole truth is a complete untruth."

Natural Life Begins at Born Again

Jesus replied, "Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again." Jn 3:3

"Man naturally has no sense of spiritual things. In vain the sun of righteousness shines before him: the eyes of his soul are blind, and cannot see.

In vain the music of Christ’s invitations sound around him: the ears of his soul are deaf, and cannot hear it. In vain the wrath of God against sin is set forth: the perceptions of his soul are stopped up;—like the sleeping traveller, he does not perceive the coming storm.

In vain the bread and water of life are offered to him: his soul is neither hungry for the one, nor thirsty for the other. In vain he is advised to flee to the Great Physician: his soul is unconscious of its disease;—why should he go?

In vain you put a price into his hand to buy wisdom: the mind of his soul wanders,—he is like the lunatic, who calls straws a crown, and dust diamonds; he says, 'I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing.' Alas, there is nothing so sad as the utter corruption of our nature!

There is nothing so painful as the anatomy of a dead soul. Now what does such a man need? He needs to be born again, and made a new creature. He needs a complete putting off the old man, and a complete putting on the new.

We do not live our natural life till we are born into the world, and we do not live our spiritual life till we are born of the Spirit."

Holiness Through Humility

For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. Rom 12:3

He that wishes to attain right views about Christian holiness, must begin by examining the vast and solemn subject of sin. He must dig down very low if he would build high. A mistake here is most mischievous. Wrong views about holiness are generally traceable to wrong views about human corruption.  J.C. Ryle

5 Dangers for Young Men

My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity. Prov 3:1-2

1. Pride

“Young men, do not be too confident in your own judgment. Stop being so sure that you are always right, and others wrong. Don’t trust your own opinion, when you find it contrary to that of older men, and especially to that of your own parents. Age gives experience, and therefore deserves respect.”

2. Love of Pleasure

“Youth is the time when our passions are strongest, and like unruly children, cry most loudly for indulgence. Youth is the time when we have generally our most health and strength: death seems far away, and to enjoy ourselves in this life seems to be everything. ‘I serve lusts and pleasures’, that is the true answer many a young man should give if asked, ‘Whose servant are you?’”

3. Thoughtlessness

“Not thinking is one simple reason why thousands of souls are thrown away forever into the Lake of Fire. Men will not consider, will not look ahead, will not look around them, will not reflect on the end of their present course, and the sure consequences of their present days, and wake up to find they are damned for a lack of thinking. Young men, none are in more danger of this than yourselves. You know little of the perils around you, and so you are careless how you walk. You hate the trouble of serious, quiet thinking, and so you make wrong decisions and bring upon yourselves much sorrow.”

4. Contempt of Religion

“This also is one of your special dangers. I always observe that none pay so little outward respect to Christianity as young men. None take so little part in our services, when they are present at them, use Bibles so little, sing so little, listen to preaching so little. None are so generally absent at prayer meetings, Bible Studies, and all other weekday helps to the soul. Young men seem to think they do not need these things, they may be good for women and old men, but not for them. They appear ashamed of seeming to care about their souls: one would almost fancy they considered it a disgrace to go to heaven at all.”

5. Fear of Man’s Opinion

“It is terrible to observe the power which the fear of man has over most minds, and especially over the minds of the young. Few seem to have any opinions of their own, or to think for themselves. Like dead fish, they go with the stream and tide. What others think is right, they think is right; and what others call wrong, they call wrong too. There are not many original thinkers in the world. Most men are like sheep, they follow a leader. If it was the fashion of the day to be Roman Catholics, they would be Roman Catholics, if it was to be Islamic, they would be Islamic. They dread the idea of going against the current of the times. In a word, the opinion of the day becomes their religion, their creed, their Bible, and their God.”

Death Has No Dominion!

For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. Rom 6:9

Death has dominion over every one of us. It is appointed unto man once to die, and the prospect is not a happy one.

Death, in fact, has pursued us from birth. Only by the goodness of God—doubtless also by the skill of some physician— have we resisted its claims thus far. Others have been defeated in their desire—and effort—to live. We have outlived them but we have not yet conquered death. One day death will claim us. Our tongues will be stilled; our activities will cease.

This conquest by death is not what God intended for us. We were created to live, not to die. Death was unknown to Adam— before he sinned. But Satan deceived Eve and overcame Adam. So, death entered by sin.

Many centuries after Adam, a Child was born to a virgin. Because God was His Father, this child was without hereditary sin. Never did sin infect His nature. And while He lived, never did He commit a sin.

Because this Second Adam knew no sin, it was not possible for death to exercise dominion over Him, the Prince of Life. However,. Christ Jesus lived among a dying race, and His great purpose was to destroy man's arch enemy, sin, and man's last foe, death.

In order to befriend and help us, He became obedient unto death. The soldiers did not kill Him on Calvary; He had already offered Himself to God a sacrifice for sin, tasting death for every man. In and through that dying, He conquered sin and overcame death itself. We inherit that twofold victory.

We are not, therefore, the helpless victims of sin, its pride, violence, and deceit. We are more than conquerors over sin, our first enemy.

Neither are we the victims of death, our last mortal enemy. Because He conquered sin and death, this Easter we experience deliverance from the bondage of death—fear. Moreover, we are confident that when death does overtake us, we shall be captive only a little while—until the shout of that great Resurrection Morning.

"Up from the grave He arose!" By His decree one day we too shall rise to die no more. Oh glorious Easter morning yet to come— the day of our resurrection; for this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

A Lakota Easter - Rev. Larry Salway

Dear Friends and Prayer Partners, 03/24/13

Today 70 believers gathered this cold, windy day in a small, remote Lakota village on the Cheyenne River Reservation.  Huddled in their chairs with slumped shoulders, their lined, forlorn faces and ragged clothing tell the story of extreme poverty and difficult lives.  Theirs is a daily struggle to survive;  a life filled with trauma, pain, grief, and much suffering.

These people are literally the poorest in the nation, living 60 miles from the nearest grocery store, gas station, or ambulance service.  The two roads in are rough gravel full of large pot holes.  They seek work but it is usually far and seasonal and transportation is difficult.  Their vehicles don't last long on these rough roads and there is not enough money to fix or buy another.

The world has passed them by- they are forgotten.  Not even their own tribe cares much for them and rarely offers assistance.  The Catholic, Episcopal, Mormon, and UCC churches were closed years ago.  There aren't enough people or funds to keep a church open, they say.  The Mennonite church is kept open by five brave single young women.  Their pastor has also left.  There is more fish in a bigger sea somewhere else.  Denominations say it is easier to win people to Jesus in other countries around the world.  The people in this village have been abandoned.

Three years ago this region suffered three major blizzards a week apart.   This village suffered greatly and barely survived.  While the rest of our region and nation focused on aid to Haiti, our nearby neighbors in this village were struggling to survive.  Their plight was told on the local and national news but few paid attention.  We need to go to Haiti, they said.  This village was snowed in with 27' drifts in several places.  No plow could get through.  The power poles were knocked down.   There was no heat, no water, no electricity, nor food for weeks in sub-zero temperatures.  It took two full weeks for their tribe to ask if they had survived.  They were too small, too insignificant- they were passed by.

A relative of the people called to ask if we could lend a hand.  Yes, we will try!   With a caravan of 5 old vehicles loaded with donated food God had sent in, we headed out for the 200 miles journey in sub-zero temps to offer our aid.  Little did we know there would be no gas station or food once we left Rapid City.  It was a remote place where we were going!  Groceries for 200 families were delivered and God's love was shared to four desperate villages.  The people were shocked!  Who are you and why do you care?   Why don't you pass us by?

The doors were opened.  We returned in a few months.  Six men gave their hearts to Christ because we cared.  We  returned again.  This time the entire village came and let us tell the Christmas story and give gifts.  More stood to accept Christ.  They signed up for a weekly DVD recording of our church service in Rapid City.  Please come back again, at least once a month, they said.  We returned again and again, and each time more people accepted Christ.  "You care!"  they said.

The local medicine man got mad.  He came to our service to pray against us to his god.  These people must be stopped, he said.  Too many people have stopped their traditional Lakota ways, and they quit praying to grandfather spirits.   This is where it all began- the Lakota religion and the white buffalo calf woman brought the pipe to the Lakota people right here, he said.  To be Lakota, they must continue their Lakota religion!  So he came with arms crossed, and a mean glare again and again at Pastor Larry as he brought the Words of Life.   His dark countenance told his story.

During Easter service last year, he came.  Once again, he heard those words- the story of Jesus, His love, His death, His sacrifice.  The invitation was given- "accept the One who gave it all for you", Pastor Larry said.  "He's the Only true Sacrifice for you."   The medicine man shook his head.  Can it be true?  He bowed his head.  Tears came down his face.  It is true!  He looked up at Pastor Larry and caught his eye.  He pointed his finger to his heart, and then up to the sky.  His toothless grin said it all.   He had found what he was looking for, and it was Jesus!  He picked up the pen and signed his name, asking for the weekly DVDs so he could learn more.  His sweat lodge he then tore  apart.

Again today we made the long trek.  A bad storm yesterday almost stopped us.  Could we make it there and back today, we asked?   The weather looked promising but the roads were still icy.  We prayed and headed out, loaded with boxes of food to distribute, a prepared dinner for the community, supplies for communion, palm branches to celebrate with, and eggs for the Easter egg hunt.  We would do it all together - Palm Sunday, Communion, and Easter Sunday all in one!

The 70 believers came, walking through the mud across the village as we unloaded and set up.  The children held their bags, waiting eagerly for their eggs.  The adults quietly gathered and talked- they had come for their monthly church service.  But today was a special one.

Unusually reverent and attentive they were, and kept the children close and quiet for once.  A holy hush settled in over the crowd as Jesus came by and ministered to each one.  Their hearts opened to the Words of Life, an invitation was given to pray and confess  their sins.  Communion was served- almost everyone stood to accept the Lord's forgiveness and the Lord's Supper.

The former medicine man came forward to shake Larry's hand.  "I'm still going strong with the Lord", he said.  We checked- the sweat lodge was still gone!

God was there.  He cared and He didn't pass them by.

"Is it worth it?", we often ask.  "Is it worth it?" the guests often ask when they visit.  "It is too far, the people are few, the cost is high," we're told.

But then Jesus comes.  Several elderly women have died, and yes, they prayed.  The 45 year old woman also died, and yes, she prayed.  The young woman suddenly died in a car wreck, and yes, she came to church.  We trust she prayed.  We almost wrecked on ice coming home, and yes, we prayed.  The former medicine man has quit holding his sweats, and yes, he prayed!

Is it worth it, we ask?  Yes!  Because Jesus came and He didn't pass us by.

May you have a blessed Easter week.   Please keep us in your prayers.

Truth of Christ's Cross

Let us set fully before our eyes the doctrine of Christ dying in our place - His substituted death, and rest our souls on it. Let us hold on firmly to the mighty truth, that Christ on the cross:

Christ on the cross: Stood in the place of His people

Christ on the cross: Died for His people

Christ on the cross: Suffered for His people

Christ on the cross: Was counted a curse and sin for His people

Christ on the cross: Paid the debts of His People

Christ on the cross: Made restitution for His people

Christ on the cross: Became the guarantee of His people

Christ on the cross: Became the representative of His people

In this way Christ obtained His people's freedom. Let us understand this clearly, and then we will see what a mighty privilege it is to be made free by Christ. This is freedom which, above all others is worth having.

It Is Finished

Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.  Heb 4:16

"The perfect satisfaction of the Father with Christ's work for His people so that Christ could say, 'It is finished,' is a ground of solid comfort to His Church forevermore! Dear Friends, once more, take comfort from this, 'It is finished,' for the redemption of Christ's Church is perfected!

There is not another penny to be paid for her full release. There is no mortgage upon Christ's inheritance. Those whom He bought with blood are forever clear of all charges, paid for to the utmost! There was a handwriting of ordinances against us, but Christ has taken it away, He has nailed it to His Cross.

'It is finished,' finished forever. All those overwhelming debts which would have sunk us to the lowest Hell have been discharged—and they who believe in Christ may appear with boldness even before the Throne of God, itself.

'It is finished.' What comfort there is in this glorious Truth of God! And I think that we may say to the Church of God that when Jesus said, 'It is finished,' her ultimate triumph was secured. 'Finished!' By that one Word He declared that He had broken the head of the old dragon.

By His death Jesus has routed the hosts of darkness and crushed the rising hopes of Hell.

We have this sure Word of promise to encourage us, 'The God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly' Surely, 'It is finished,' sounds like the trumpet of victory! Let us have faith to claim that victory through the blood of the Lamb!

Signs of growing in grace.

It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God--that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. I Cor 1:30

There are some proofs that we are growing in grace that are good tests for each of us to apply to our own experience.

1. Easier victory over the trials which are inevitable in this life. We can easily discover whether we are as much annoyed as formerly by poverty, anxiety about the future, losses, slights, and Insults.

2. Quicker recognition of the Divine will. The better acquainted we become with the Holy Spirit, the more readily we ought to recognize his leading and commands.

3. Less severe temptations from the world. The world is our enemy, seeking either to allure us or to frighten us. We ought to care less, the better we know Jesus, for the influence of the world that seeks to drag us down to its level.

4. Deeper insight Into the Word of God. It re-quires spiritual sight to behold the beauties of God's Word and to see its spiritual lesson. As grace increases, insight into the Word increases.

5. Better knowledge of the devices of Satan. The apostle says, "We are not ignorant of his devices." We ought to know the author after a. while, as soon as we hear his suggestions.

6. Fiercer attacks of the devil. The farther along we get in grace, the more Satan will attack us. Greater temptations give greater victories, and hence greater installments of grace. God will not allow him to "tempt us above that which we are able," but Satan will meet our increased strength with, fiercer attacks.

7. Greater charity for the infirmities of others. The more we grow in grace, the more we shall love other people, and make allowances for their weaknesses and sorrow for their sins.

8. The establishment of the faith habit. Faith after a time ceases to be a series of spasmodic struggles, and settles into an unbroken life.

9. A greater love and practice of secret prayer. Certainly, the more we love God the more we shall feel the need of so doing.

We are sure that those who add these marks of increasing grace in their experience may well thank God, and take courage—Christian Witness and Advocate of Bible Holiness.

Proportion your zeal

It is fine to be zealous, provided the purpose is good, and to be so always and not just when I am with you. Gal 4:18

Take then the whole of religion together, just as God has revealed it in his word; and be uniformly zealous for every part of it, according to its degree of excellence, grounding all our zeal on the one foundation, — “Jesus Christ and him crucified;” holding fast this one principle, — “The life I now live, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved ME, and gave himself for Me.”

Proportion your zeal to the value of its object. Be calmly zealous, therefore, First, for the Church; “the whole state of Christ’s Church militant here on earth;” and in particular for that branch thereof with which you are more immediately connected. Be more zealous for all those “ordinances which our blessed Lord hath appointed, to continue therein to the end of the world. Be more zealous for those works of mercy, those “sacrifices wherewith God is well pleased,” those marks whereby the Shepherd of Israel will know his sheep at the last day. Be more zealous still for holy tempers, for long-suffering, gentleness, meekness, lowliness, and resignation: But be most zealous of all for love, the queen of all graces, the highest perfection in earth or heaven, the very image of the invisible God, as in men below, so in angels above. For as God is love; and he that dwelleth in love, dwelleth in God, and God in him,”

Our Choicest Zeal

It is fine to be zealous, provided the purpose is good, and to be so always and not just when I am with you. Gal 4:18

But our choicest zeal should be reserved for love itself, — the end of the commandment, the fulfilling of the law. The Church, the ordinances, outward works of every kind, yea, all other holy tempers, are inferior to
this, and rise in value only as they approach nearer and nearer to it. Here then is the great object of Christian zeal. Let every true believer in Christ apply, with all fervency of spirit, to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, that his heart may be more and more enlarged in love to God and to all mankind. This one thing let him do: Let him “press on to this prize of our high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”

It is fine to be zealous

It is fine to be zealous, provided the purpose is good, and to be so always and not just when I am with you. Gal 4:18

In a Christian believer love sits upon the throne which is erected in the inmost soul; namely, love of God and man, which fills the whole heart, and reigns without a rival.

In a circle near the throne are all holy tempers;—long-suffering, gentleness, meekness, fidelity, temperance; and if any other were comprised in “the mind which was in Christ Jesus.”

In an exterior circle are all the works of mercy, whether to the souls or bodies of men. By these we exercise all holy tempers; by these we continually improve them, so that all these are real means of grace, although this is not commonly adverted to.

Next to these are those that are usually termed works of piety;—reading and hearing the word, public, family, private prayer, receiving the Lord’s Supper, fasting or abstinence.

Lastly, that his followers may the more effectually provoke one another to love, holy tempers, and good works, our blessed Lord has united them together in one body, the Church, dispersed all over the earth; a little emblem of which, of the Church universal, we have in every particular Christian congregation.

Raising The Bar

I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.  Phil 3:14

Your Attitude
Maintain constantly the same attitude that was necessary to receive the Spirit. You had to desire Him above all else when you were seeking His filling. You cannot desire Him less now without grieving Him. You had to humble yourself then. If you let in pride now, it will ultimately drive out the Spirit.

Your Choices
You had to separate yourself completely from evil then. You cannot go back to evil practice and maintain the Spirit's fullness now. You had to deny yourself then. You can not follow selfish choices now. You had to yield yourself fully then. You must keep yourself yielded. Complete obedience was necessary to receive the Spirit. Willful disobedience will drive Him away sorrowful. You had to consecrate your all to God then.

Your Constancy
Withdrawal of any part of that consecration now is dishonest, for you pledged everything to God forever. It is sin to withdraw your consecration. To be kept filled with the Spirit you need not less but more of those preparatory attitudes.

Your Testimony
It is faith in your heart that brings you the victory, but confession with the lips must follow. See Romans 10: 10. Do not 'boast of what you have done, or of what you are, but humbly witness to what God has done for you in words that exalt God, and tend to keep self out of sight.

I Am Resolved

"Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland." Isa 43: 18-19

I resolve to choose God: to follow as He leads, where He leads, and when He leads.

I would make my days joyous even when clouds obscure the sun's bright shining—joyous with the joy born not of earthy things or possessions but of divine relationship.

I would fill every day with purposeful endeavor—not for selfish ends, but for sacred accomplishments.

I would live for others—for their physical and spiritual welfare.

I would aim to be great according to Christ's measure—"He that would be great among you let him be servant of all."

I would aim to adjust myself to whatever circumstances may surround me, and not try to adjust everything to my desires.

I would maintain my faith in my fellowman, and endeavor to keep sweet in spite of ingratitude, treachery, or meanness.

I would keep my heart clean—unscarred by dishonesty, littleness, or selfishness.

I would gain new visions of God—new visions of His truth, His justice, His holiness, His hatred for sin, His undying love for man.

I would be a cup of strength to suffering souls, a voice to straying souls, a helping hand to faltering souls.

Worship Without Hearing

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Matt 5:6

"I have in my congregation," said a venerable minister of the gospel, "a worthy aged woman, who has for many years been so deaf as not to distinguish the loudest sound, and yet she is always one of the first in the meeting." On asking the reason of her constant attendance, as it was impossible for her to hear my voice, she answered, " Though I cannot hear you, I come to God's house because I love it, and would be found in his ways, and he gives me many a sweet thought upon the text when it is pointed out to me; another reason is, because I am in the best company, in tho most immediate presence of God, and amongst his saints, the honorable of the earth. I am not satisfied with serving God in private; it is my duty and privilege to honor Him regularly and constantly in public."

When The Church Is Willing

When the Church of Christ is willing, as were the early apostles, to go all the way with God the demands will not seem grievous but a great privilege, offering an open door into a life of power and vital spiritual living that will prove the key to revival. Let us briefly here review a few of these demands.

Rectification of the past life. Restitution is a very unpopular theme, but a very vital one. "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper," Much of the deadliest, coldness and powerlessness today can be traced to unconfessed sin. We have known of people professing to have received the gift of the Holy Ghost who later became convicted of the need of restitution. In their possession were articles that belonged to others, No wonder they lived defeated lives.

Separation front the world. This is not so hard as it seems. When one takes a glimpse at the "inheritance among them that are sanctified" the things of time appear truly as the "weak and beggarly elements" that they are. Here is no legal, self-imposed imprisonment that leans with elbows on the fence, gazing with green eyes at the attractive pastimes of the devotees of pleasure. Separation from the world brings us down to earth. We are "set apart" not for the museum shelf, but for hard and often dirty work where the needy of this world are to be found. We are most truly in the world but not of the world. Praise God for this demand. And when Christians will rise to it, a revival is well on the way
.
Crucifixion to self. Self is the culprit that divides our churches; brings formality into our worship; crowds God out of the pulpit; and mars many an effort of otherwise earnest Christians. True holiness is not our mere claiming of something. Two things happen: Self goes, and the Holy Spirit fills the temple.

A life of prayer. Holiness without this is a great farce. The indwelling Christ calls to prayer. The Holy Spirit burdens us with love for precious souls. The only relief comes in fervent heartfelt prayer. Because of this fact holiness is indeed the key to revival. For a praying church is a revived church. This demand becomes a gracious prerogative. Holiness that does not lead us often to the prayer closet and frequently keep us there for a long time is not the experience held out in the New Testament.

The above are only a few of the demands of holiness which indeed become the greatest of privileges. May God raise up Christians as of old who are willing to come up to the grand old standard of this precious blood-bought inheritance.

Be Ye Separate...

"Your wine is mixed with water" (Isa. 1: 22)

Restraint in things religious is the popular thing in some circles.

To belong to church, to be nominally Christian, is quite the proper thing. This demon-inspired philosophy runs like this: we must have a little religion to restrain our worldly practices, but we need a little sin to make life spicy. We are advised to be tolerant, co-operative and judicious in attacks on sin. Attack the sins that are under public disapproval, but never lift your voice in opposition to the mass opinion of the religious group with whom you associate. Be very careful not to offend anyone in your communion who could make it hard for you.

This is lukewarmness, compromise, treason against the kingdom of Christ. The wine is mixed with water—revolting, nauseating—and is doomed to utter rejection.

God's people, from the days of righteous Abel, have been holy, different from sinners, undefiled in motives. Satan's policy across the centuries has been amalgamation—erase the lines of demarcation, form a world-church.

"Be ye separate" is God's command that comes ringing down through the centuries. Men have differed widely on the meaning of this command as it touched the fringes of life but all through the years the holy men and women have been impelled by an inner urge to be God-like, to be separate from and antagonistic to every form of belief or practice that would rob God of His glory.

The man who is living a life pleasing to God has an inward nonconformity to the world. Whatever tends to dampen the love, or wean the soul from God, or weaken the high resolve to live a holy life is separated from with humble compliance to the will of God.

"Live as becometh holiness."

"Be perfect."

There is no room for hybrids, no place for compromise. Christ demands a full commitment, an ever widening of the margin between the soul and the world.

Seeking the Lost

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matt 28:19-20

Men away from the Christ are lost. They must be found and led to the Lord Jesus if they are to escape the horrors of eternal fire. The call comes to the followers of Christ: "Make disciples of all nations"; "Compel them to come in." To this great adventure each believer should diligently apply himself. To effectively perform the task of soul winning—

See your field. What a field God has given to you. Multitudes there are who know not the power of God's grace. They sit in the bondage of sin or in the darkness of superstition or trust in a false hope.
These men have no poetry in their life, no hope in their hearts and no song in their soul. They spend their threescore years and ten living by the law of the jungle, with a nameless dread stalking their waking hours and disturbing their dreams.

Wickedness increaseth, delinquency startles us, crime threatens every home. The chill of the Laodicean age swirls about u.s as a terrible wintertime blizzard, obliterating familiar landmarks, and chilling the most resolute. This is the field in which you must work.

See yourself. A sinner saved for a purpose! A beneficiary of the piety of generations now dead! A called-out one whose sole duty is to glorify God and publish the Good News.

You are commissioned by the Christ: "As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I sent them into the world." You are the salt of the earth, the light of the world. Notice it carefully—you are not salt dispensers, you are salt; you are not the light bringers, you are the light, to a generation that desperately needs salt and light.

You have been given a talent to invest for Christ. He will not demand large returns, but He will demand faithful effort. At the peril of your soul you dare not fail.

See your God. An available God; a beholding God; a conquering God. A God big enough for this day of confusion and perplexity, is our God. A God moved with compassion over a lost race, a God whose heart throbs with love for every victim of Satan's deception, commands "Go— tell."

Then to every city and village hurry with the message of Redeeming Love. Tell of the gospel of God that saves from the uttermost to the uttermost. Proclaim a salvation that changes the life stream so that it flows Godward; a salvation that opens prison houses where the slaves of sin are held in galling bondage, and releases from the dungeons of despair the victims of falsehood and superstition. Proclaim liberty throughout all the land to all the inhabitants thereof.

This will require loyalty to God and to the leadership which He has ordained. It will require sacrifice to the point of personal self-denial. It will require leaving the well-planned and smug way of life to go out where the currents run fierce and dangerous.

Live daringly, venture recklessly, attempt the impossible in the Name of the Lord, then see the mountains flow down at His presence.

Be determined that before the year closes new churches will be started and new centers of revival fires will be launched in the Name of the Lord.

God-Breathed...

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Tim 3:16-17

For even if it [Scripture] wins reverence for itself by its own majesty, it seriously affects us only when it is sealed upon our hearts through the Spirit. Therefore, illumined by his power, we believe neither by our own nor by anyone else’s judgment that Scripture is from God. But above human judgment we affirm with utter certainty (just as if we were gazing upon the majesty of God himself) that it has flowed to us from the very mouth of God by the ministry of men.

-John Calvin
